Replanted

Reincarnation is a bedrock of Yiddishkeit. How many times have we been told that all our neshamas (souls) stood at Har Sinai when we received the Torah?

Where has my been before? The answer is “I’ll never know in this lifetime.” But my neshama calls out to me daily to help it, to pity it, to elevate it. As a human being, although I have obligations to family, community, country and civilization at large, I must tend to my inner most essence, my neshama, the reason why I was born.

In Hashem’s wisdom, he replants a neshama into a tiny baby and the neshama depends on the body to use its limbs, brains, and organs to zoom it up to a higher level. The soul speaks to it daily, yet it is mute to the physical ears.

Hashem guides us through Divine Providence to the situations and the physical places within the universe where we can redeem our souls by rectifying our previous wrongdoings. Any environment in which you find yourself, is the one where you can do the most good for your soul.

Do you think I’m the girl in my dreams?”

Rabbi Bodenheim gazed over the top of his daughter’s head. “You don’t need to know,” he said softly.

“Doesn’t my soul need to know?"

“Your soul knows already,” he said.

“But what about me?" Netta pulled away and searched her father’s face. “Am I supposed to fix up what I did wrong?”

“Ahh. Hashem has His vast plan for the universe,” Rabbi Bodenheim said in a singsong voice that he used when learning Gemara. “When a reincarnated soul reenters this world, it’s tasked with its mission, and Hashem in His mercy gifts each person with the exact talents and traits needed to accomplish it. A Yid only has to open his eyes and seize the opportunity Hashem places before him to do the right thing. Therefore, it doesn't matter if you're the girl in the dream or not. It only matters what you choose to do with this life.”

“Do you know what your mission is?”

“I’m using my talents to take care of you,” he smiled, “and my congregation. Good night, Netta.” He turned off the light on his way out.

Netta slumped back onto her pillows, tightly shutting her eyes, envisioning Kezia.
